From sound pressure to decibels
Sound level meters measure sound pressure level (SPL): how much the air pressure fluctuates compared with the quietest sound a human ear can detect (20 micropascals). Because that range is enormous, it is expressed in decibels. Our tool uses your device microphone to estimate that level live in your browser.
SPL readings without hardware
A dedicated SPL meter costs from tens to thousands of dollars. For everyday reference – rehearsal rooms, home cinema levels, street noise – your browser and microphone can give a usable estimate in seconds.
What dB(A) means on real meters
Professional meters report dB(A), a frequency weighting that follows human hearing, and sometimes dB(C) for bass-heavy sound. Browser microphones are not calibrated to those standards, so treat readings here as reference estimates and use the calibration offset if you can compare against a known meter.

Is this a real SPL meter?
It is a software estimate based on your microphone. It shows genuine relative changes in sound level, but absolute accuracy depends on your device and calibration – so it complements rather than replaces a measuring instrument.
Can I use it for OSHA or EU workplace compliance?
No. Compliance measurements must be taken with calibrated Class 1/2 instruments following defined procedures. You can use this meter to spot-check whether a proper assessment is worth commissioning.
How do I get the most accurate reading?
Keep the microphone unobstructed, hold the device at arm’s length from the source, avoid wind and vibration, and calibrate against a known reference level if you have access to one.
