What a dB meter shows
A dB meter picks up sound with your microphone and converts the sound pressure into decibels (dB). The scale is logarithmic: a jump of 10 dB feels roughly twice as loud. Our browser meter gives you a live estimate you can use for everyday reference checks – from a quiet office to a loud street.

When a browser dB meter is enough
For checking a noisy street, a home office, or whether tonight is louder than usual, a browser meter is plenty. For workplace compliance, legal disputes, or engineering, you need a calibrated Class 1 or Class 2 device.
Frequently asked questions
Is an online dB meter accurate?
It depends on your microphone. Phone and laptop mics are tuned for voice, so extreme lows and highs are compressed. After calibrating against a known reference, readings are typically within a few dB in the everyday range – good for comparisons and reference checks, not for certified measurements.
What is the difference between dB and dB(A)?
dB(A) applies a filter that mimics how human hearing responds to different frequencies, and most noise guidelines use it. Certified meters measure dB(A) with calibrated hardware; browser readings are best treated as reference estimates alongside those guidelines.
Do I need to install anything?
No. The meter runs entirely in your browser using the microphone API. Audio is processed locally on your device and never uploaded.
